Book Review: If God is Love, Don't be a Jerk

November 15, 2021

I started recommending this book to friends when I was only a third of the way into it. I follow the author on Facebook, and expected to learn from his book and enjoy reading it. The book exceeded my expectations. I normally stay away from books on spirituality. My attention span is too short to wade through pages of references and lofty thoughts. If God is Love is different. Pavlovitz draws on his own experiences, making the text more about concrete examples rather than theoretical musings. Parts of his narrative are fun to read. I laughed out loud several times. As expected, he points out the hypocrisy in some right wing Christians who don't live or act like Jesus did. But he also challenges liberals like me to look at our own hypocrisy. When he says anyone who claims to know who or what God is is deceiving themselves, he is talking to me, too. His overall message is to be love in a world that desperately needs it. I am in a spiritual program that challenges me to continue to improve my conscious contact with God as I understand God. This book helped me tweak my understanding of God, and will help me improve that connection.
